Abstract

Acute myocardial infarction is the most common form of premature death in the industrial world. Its early recognition and active intervention are becoming important in the light of recent advances, particularly the use of streptokinase shortly after the onset of the infarct. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is important both inside and outside the hospital. General practitioners should be confident in performing both basic life support and advanced cardiac life support since the potential needs for resuscitation is becoming great.In semi-rural areas where the general practitioner is usually the first to be called for assistance, the use of advanced resuscitation and life support does save lives. The defibrillator is an essential piece of equipment for monitoring, diagnosis, management and treatment in these cases.Following myocardial infarction the family physician has a major role to play in rehabilitation and tertiary prevention by prescribing beta-blockers, starting within two weeks of the infarct.Key Words: myocardial infarction - premature death - CPR - streptokinase - defibrillator

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine head, chest dan abdominal circumferences as measurements for predicting gestational age of the newborn infant.During the period of August 1989 to December 1990, 1033 newborns with known gestational age were studied. Anthropometric measurements were done in the first two hours after birth, using measuring tapes by two examiners.High correlations were found between head, chest and abdominal circumferences with gestational age, and the linear aquations were Y= 0,075 X + 14,310 (Coefficient of Correlation/r = 0,72); Y= 0,066 X + 18,33 (r = 0,71) and Y= 0,056 X + 22,34 (r = 0,67) respectively. Further analysis by multiple regression revealed that gestational age (in weeks) as function of head, chest and abdominal circumferences (in millimeter) was Y= 0,036 X1 + 0,023 X2 + 0,020 X3 + 13,699.Measurements of head, chest and abdominal circumferences in the first two hours after birth can be used for estimating gestational age in the newborn infant.Key Words: head circumference - trunk circumference - abdominal circumference - gestational age - newborns

Abstract

Resistance to the glucoregulatory effects of insulin is well-documented in type -2, non-insulindependent diabetes. Two separate factors may contribute in the pathogenesis, namely the obesity-related and the non-obesity-related.Obesity-related insulin resistance is associated with hyperinsulinemia, reduced numbers of insulin receptors on target cells. The mechanism by which the insulin receptor number is decreaSed is not clearly understood. This phenomenon is called "down regulation". If the defect in glucose transport can not be overcome at any insulin concentration, insulin unresponsiveness is present. This is caused by unidentified abnormalities distal to the receptor, "postreceptor defect".In non-obesity-related, a-cell dysfunction, secretion of abnormal insulin, failure to convert proinsulin to insulin, or hormonal antagonist to insulin, is thought to be responsible for the resistance.Key Words: type -2 diabetes mellitus - insulin receptor - insulin resistance - insulin antagonist - obesity-related and non-obesity-related factors

Abstract

There are differences in background between cancer and other diseases, among others the difference in sex incidence, behaviour, cellular changes, and clinical aspects. Therefore, research on cancer is suggested to be based on cancer epidemiology, basic research, and clinical research. This article discusses the basic principles of cancer research from the point of view of epidemiological and clinical concepts.It is concluded that research in cancer epidemiology must be based on the well-developed cancer registry. The epidemiological and clinical research of cancer must be brought into a comprehensive scheme. It will be useful if basic research is correlated with research in cancer epidemiology. Clinical research must be based on epidemiological and basic research.Key Words: cancer research - cancer registry - cancer epidemiology - oncology - clinical trials

Abstract

Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 and Bac. sphaericus 1593 are quite promising as biological control agents utilized as alternatives of chemical insecticides in controlling mosquitoes of disease vectors.The present studies are aimed at determining the larvicidal activities•of Bac. thuringiensis H-14 and Bac. sphaericus 1593 against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles aconitus, respectively recorded as the main vectors of dengue haemorrhagic fever, bancroftian filariasis and Malaria in Java.Two types of primary powder of Bac. thuringiensis H-14 (IPS 82) and Bac. sphaericus 1593 (RB 80) were tested on their respective activities against larval stages of the three species of mosquitoes under laboratory conditions.It was concluded that, ranked from the high to low level, Bac. thuringiensis H-14 was larvicidal to Ae. aegypti, Cx. quinquefasciatus and An. aconitus, whereas B. sphaericus 1593 was larvicidal to Cx. quinquefasciatus, An. aconitus and Ae. aegypti mosquitoes.Key Words: Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 - Bacillus spaericus 1593 - Aedes aegypti - Culex quinquefasciatus - Anopheles aconitus
